Kkotji Beach (꽃지해수욕장) is a beautiful beach on Anmyeondo Island in Taean, on Korea’s west coast.
What makes Kkotji Beach special is that the beach completely changes with the tide.
When the tide is high, you can enjoy swimming and playing in the sea. When the tide goes out, a wide tidal flat appears where you can walk around, look for crabs and sea snails, and dig for shellfish with a small hand shovel.
The tidal flat was also easier to walk on than I expected. The ground was relatively firm, so our feet did not sink deeply into the mud.
And before leaving, stay for sunset.
Kkotji Beach is one of Korea’s famous west-coast sunset destinations, especially for the view around the iconic Halmi and Halabi Rocks.

Why Visit Kkotji Beach?
The biggest attraction of Kkotji Beach is that you can enjoy several different experiences in one place.
At high tide, you can swim and play in the sea.
When the tide goes out, the beach changes into a large tidal-flat area where you can explore with children and look for small marine creatures.
Then, in the evening, you can watch the sunset around Halmi and Halabi Rocks.
You don’t have to choose between a swimming beach, a tidal-flat experience, and a sunset spot.
You can experience all three in one visit.
High Tide – Swimming at Kkotji Beach
When the tide comes in, Kkotji Beach becomes a great place to enjoy the sea.
During summer, you can swim, play in the water, and relax on the sandy beach.
If you are traveling with children, you can spend part of the day swimming and playing on the sand.
But one of the interesting things about Korea’s west coast is how much the scenery changes with the tide.
The beach you see while swimming can look completely different just a few hours later.
So if you have enough time, don’t leave immediately after swimming.
Wait for the tide to go out and another experience begins.
Low Tide – Easy Tidal-Flat Exploring
When the tide goes out, a wide area of sand, tidal flats, and rocks appears.
One thing I particularly liked about the tidal flat at Kkotji Beach was how easy it was to walk around.
During our visit, the ground was relatively firm, so our feet did not sink deeply into the mud.
This made walking around much easier than I expected and was especially convenient when exploring with children.
You can walk across the exposed tidal area and explore the sand and rocks.
Because the ground is relatively firm, you can spend time walking around and looking for small marine creatures without constantly sinking into deep mud.
Finding Crabs, Shellfish & Sea Snails
Low tide is when another fun activity begins.
We looked around the tidal flats and found small crabs, shellfish, and sea snails.
If you bring a small hand shovel, you can gently dig into the sand and look for shellfish.
For children, this can be a lot of fun.
Instead of simply looking at the ocean, they can walk around the tidal flat, dig in the sand, and discover small marine creatures themselves.
We caught some during our visit, but only for the experience.
After looking at them, we released them all back into the sea.
If you are visiting Kkotji Beach with children, I recommend bringing water shoes and a small hand shovel.
Halmi & Halabi Rocks
The most recognizable landmarks at Kkotji Beach are Halmi Rock and Halabi Rock (할미바위·할아비바위).
The appearance of the two rocks changes depending on the tide.
At high tide, seawater surrounds them.
At low tide, the water retreats and a large area around the rocks becomes exposed.
This creates a completely different landscape and gives you another perspective of Kkotji Beach.
It is also a good time to explore the beach and take photos.
However, remember that the tide eventually comes back in.
If you walk far out during low tide, keep checking the water and return before the incoming tide reaches the area.
One of Korea’s Famous Sunset Spots
Kkotji Beach is not only known for swimming and tidal-flat exploring.
It is also one of Korea’s famous west-coast sunset destinations.
The most iconic view is the sun dropping toward the horizon around Halmi and Halabi Rocks.
As evening approaches, the atmosphere changes again.
During the day, families enjoy swimming in the sea.
At low tide, people explore the tidal flats.
Near sunset, visitors gather along the beach to watch and photograph the sky as it turns orange and red.
If the weather is clear, I recommend staying until the sun disappears below the horizon.
After swimming and exploring the tidal flats during the day, watching the sunset is a great way to finish your visit.
Best Way to Experience Kkotji Beach
If you have enough time, I don’t recommend visiting Kkotji Beach for only a short stop.
The beach changes throughout the day depending on the tide.
My recommended plan is:
High Tide → Swimming → Low Tide → Tidal-Flat Exploring → Sunset
First, enjoy swimming when the water is in.
When the tide goes out, put on your water shoes, take a small hand shovel, and explore the tidal flats.
Look for crabs, shellfish, and sea snails.
Then stay until evening and watch the sunset around Halmi and Halabi Rocks.
This allows you to experience several different sides of Korea’s west coast in one visit.
Visiting Kkotji Beach with Children
I think Kkotji Beach is particularly enjoyable for families with children.
Swimming is only one part of the experience.
When the tide goes out, children can walk around the exposed tidal flat and search for crabs, shellfish, and sea snails.
During our visit, the ground was firm enough that our feet did not sink deeply into the mud, which made it easier to explore with children.
A small hand shovel makes the experience even more interesting because children can gently dig through the sand looking for shellfish.
After finding marine creatures, we observed them briefly and released them back into the sea.
Just remember to keep checking the tide, especially if you walk farther from the beach.

This is the most important tip.
If you want to swim, check when the water will be in.
If you want to explore the tidal flats and look for shellfish, check the low-tide time.

A small hand shovel is useful for gently digging through the sand and looking for shellfish.
It can be especially fun for children.
Bring Water Shoes
Water shoes are useful when walking across wet sand, tidal flats, and rocky areas.
