Best Korea Beach Trip from Seoul – Daecheon Beach & Boryeong Mud Festival

If you are looking for a beach trip outside Seoul, Daecheon Beach in Boryeong is one of the best places to experience Korea’s west coast.

Beach parasols and chairs for visitors at Daecheon Beach in Boryeong, Korea

Daecheon is one of the largest and most famous beaches on Korea’s West Sea. It is known for its long sandy beach, beautiful sunset, lively summer atmosphere and the internationally famous Boryeong Mud Festival

I visited Daecheon Beach with my family for a 2-day, 1-night summer trip.

There were four of us: two adults and two children.

We went swimming, ate food under our own parasol, stayed overnight at a local minbak, ate steamed shellfish and Korean barbecue for dinner, watched the West Sea sunset and enjoyed the busy streets and live performances around Daecheon Beach at night.

Why Visit Daecheon Beach?

Wide sandy beach and beachfront area at Daecheon Beach in Boryeong, Korea

Daecheon Beach is one of the most famous beaches on Korea’s west coast.

The beach is approximately 3.5 km long and 100 meters wide, with a gentle slope and a large sandy shoreline.

Unlike a small beach where you might stay for only an hour or two, Daecheon is large enough to spend an entire summer day swimming, eating and relaxing.

The area around the beach is also well developed for tourism.

There are accommodations, restaurants, convenience stores, restrooms and entertainment around the beach, making it particularly convenient for families.

What Is Korea’s West Sea Like?

There is one important thing international travelers should understand before visiting Daecheon:

The tide can make a big difference.

Korea’s west coast is known for significant tidal changes.

At low tide, the water may be relatively far from the upper beach. As the tide comes in, the shoreline gradually moves closer.

I experienced this myself during my visit.

I Had to Move My Parasol Three Times

I brought my own parasol instead of renting one.

When we first arrived, I wanted our family to be close to the sea, so I set up the parasol relatively close to the water.

Parasol set up on the sandy beach at Daecheon Beach in Boryeong, Korea

At first, it was a great location.

But as time passed, the water continued moving toward us.

Eventually, it became too close to our belongings, so I moved everything farther back.

Then the water came closer again.

I moved it again.

In total, I moved our parasol about three times.

It was a little annoying, especially because we had food, drinks and other beach items with us.

My Parasol Tip

If you bring your own parasol to Daecheon Beach, don’t automatically choose the closest possible location to the water.

Look at the general line where the established rental parasols are positioned.

They are accustomed to the West Sea tide and are generally positioned farther back from the advancing water.

If you set up around that general area instead of directly beside the water, you may not have to keep moving your belongings.

I also recommend checking the day’s high and low tide times before visiting.

This is probably the most useful thing I learned from my trip.

Swimming at Daecheon Beach

We spent much of the day swimming.

Daecheon has a wide sandy beach and a relatively gentle slope, which is one reason it has become such a popular summer destination.

Our day was very simple.

We swam for a while, returned to our parasol, rested and ate something, and then went swimming again.

For our family, this was enough to fill most of the day.

Always use the designated swimming areas and follow current weather, water conditions and lifeguard instructions.

Breakfast – Seolleongtang

We started the morning at a local Korean restaurant.

For breakfast, I ate seolleongtang (설렁탕).

Seolleongtang is a traditional Korean beef-bone soup with a mild broth.

It might seem unusual to eat a hot soup before going to the beach in the middle of summer, but Koreans eat soup dishes throughout the year.

It was filling and gave us a good start before spending hours at the beach.

For international travelers who want a local Korean breakfast rather than coffee and bread, seolleongtang or gukbap can be good options.

Lunch on Daecheon Beach

For lunch, we didn’t leave the beach to sit inside a restaurant.

We bought chicken and hamburgers from a nearby Mom’s Touch and brought the food back to our parasol.

I also had three cans of beer during the day.

Eating lunch under the parasol while looking directly at the sea was one of the most relaxing parts of the trip.

It also meant we didn’t have to interrupt our beach day just because we were hungry.

After eating, we could rest for a while and then go swimming again.

There are several fast-food restaurants near the beach where you can easily grab fried chicken and burgers. Most are popular Korean chain restaurants, and I’ll show you how to order and enjoy them like a local.

Convenience Stores Near the Beach

One of the things that made Daecheon particularly convenient was having convenience stores close to the beach.

You don’t have to bring everything from Seoul.

If you need something during the day, you can walk to a nearby convenience store and buy items such as:

  • Instant ramen
  • Cold bottled water
  • Ice
  • Snacks
  • Soft drinks
  • Beer and other beverages

Then you can bring your food and drinks back to your spot on the beach.

This was very convenient for us because we could keep our parasol as our base for the day and get additional food, water or ice when we needed it.

Remember to collect your cans, containers and other trash afterward and dispose of everything properly.

Restrooms Are Close to the Beach

This is a small detail, but it becomes important when you spend several hours at the beach.

Restrooms were conveniently located near the beach during our visit.

For a family traveling with children, this makes a big difference.

Between the nearby restrooms, convenience stores and restaurants, we didn’t have to travel far away from the beach every time we needed something.

Dinner – Steamed Shellfish and Unlimited Pork Belly

After swimming, we went out for dinner.

Steamed shellfish platter and self-service food bar near Daecheon Beach

There were four of us: two adults and two children.

We ordered steamed shellfish (jogae-jjim / 조개찜) for ₩70,000.

The interesting part was that thinly sliced pork belly (daepae samgyeopsal / 대패삼겹살) was available continuously with the meal.

This combination worked particularly well for our family.

The adults could enjoy the steamed shellfish, while there was also grilled pork belly for the children and anyone who wanted meat.

What We Had

Steamed shellfish: ₩70,000
Daepae samgyeopsal: Available continuously with our meal
Our group: 2 adults + 2 children

Jogae-jjim is a Korean seafood dish in which various shellfish are steamed and served hot.

Daepae samgyeopsal is pork belly sliced extremely thin, allowing it to cook very quickly on a Korean barbecue grill.

After spending much of the day swimming, it was a satisfying dinner.

The ₩70,000 price and the pork belly arrangement are based on my personal visit. Restaurant prices and policies can change.

Watching the West Sea Sunset

After dinner, we went back toward Daecheon Beach to watch the sunset.

This is something I strongly recommend.

Korea’s east coast is famous for watching the sunrise over the sea, while the west coast is ideal for watching the sunset.

Low tide and sunset at Kkotji Beach on Korea's west coast

At Daecheon, you can finish swimming, have dinner and then return to the beach as the sun begins to go down.

The sunset gave the trip a completely different atmosphere from the busy daytime beach.

Staying overnight also meant we didn’t have to watch the clock and immediately begin a long journey back to Seoul.

Daecheon Beach at Night

Daecheon did not become quiet after sunset.

During our visit, there were still many people walking around the streets near the beach at night.

We also found areas with performances and busking

The music, people and summer night atmosphere made walking around after dinner enjoyable.

We spent some time enjoying the performances and the atmosphere before returning to our accommodation.

For me, this was another reason why staying overnight was better than visiting Daecheon only as a day trip.

During the day, you have the beach.

Around sunset, the atmosphere changes.

And at night, you can walk around the busy tourist area and enjoy performances before going back to your accommodation.

Where We Stayed – Roen Minbak

We stayed at Roen Minbak (로엔민박) for one night.

I paid ₩120,000 for our stay.

This was the actual amount I paid during my visit, not a guaranteed standard price.

Accommodation rates around Daecheon can change significantly depending on the season, weekends, holidays and the Boryeong Mud Festival period.

A minbak (민박) is a simple Korean-style accommodation, often operated by a local owner.

For travelers who normally stay only at large hotels, it can be a different way to experience domestic travel in Korea.

After enjoying the beach, dinner, sunset and the night atmosphere, we returned to our accommodation and finished our first day.

Why I Recommend 1 Night and 2 Days

You can visit Daecheon from Seoul as a day trip.

But based on my experience, 1 night and 2 days is better, especially for families.

A day trip means you have to think about your return transportation while you’re still enjoying the beach.

By staying overnight, we could:

Enjoy swimming without rushing.

Eat dinner near the beach.

Watch the sunset.

Walk around Daecheon at night.

Enjoy performances and busking.

Then simply return to our accommodation.

It turned a beach visit into a proper family trip.

Boryeong Mud Festival

Daecheon Beach is also home to the internationally famous Boryeong Mud Festival.

The festival transforms part of the beach area into a large summer event with mud experiences, water activities and performances.

2026 Boryeong Mud Festival

The 29th Boryeong Mud Festival was held from:

July 24 to August 9, 2026

The festival took place around Daecheon Beach, with the main experience zone at Boryeong Mud Expo Square and additional activities around Mud Square.

Programs included a General Zone, Family Zone and Water Park Zone, making the festival accessible to different age groups.

There were also performances and special events during the festival period.

If you are traveling with children, check the Family Zone information and current admission rules before visiting.

If you want a lively festival experience, visit during the Mud Festival.

If you prefer a more relaxed beach holiday, consider visiting outside the main festival dates.

How to Get to Daecheon Beach From Seoul

Daecheon Beach is outside Seoul, but it is accessible by public transportation as well as by car.

Option 1 – Train to Daecheon Station

A convenient public transportation option is traveling by train toward:

Daecheon Station (대천역)

Depending on the train and timetable, services from the Seoul area may depart from Yongsan Station, so search the current Korail schedule before traveling.

After arriving at Daecheon Station, remember that the station and Daecheon Beach are not in the same place.

You will need additional transportation from the station to the beach.

A local bus is an option.

For international travelers carrying luggage or families traveling with children, a taxi from Daecheon Station can be considerably easier.

When returning to Seoul, simply reverse the route:

Daecheon Beach → Daecheon Station → Seoul area

Always check the latest train schedule before your trip, especially during weekends and summer holidays.

Option 2 – Intercity Bus

You can also travel from the Seoul area toward Boryeong by intercity bus.

After arriving at the Boryeong bus terminal, continue to Daecheon Beach using a local bus or taxi.

Check the current departure terminal and timetable before traveling because bus routes can change.

Option 3 – Driving From Seoul

For our style of family beach trip, driving has some advantages.

If you bring your own car, it is much easier to carry:

  • A parasol
  • Beach equipment
  • Towels
  • Extra clothes
  • Children’s swimming equipment
  • Food and drinks
  • Overnight luggage

The main disadvantage is summer traffic.

Weekends and the Boryeong Mud Festival period can be particularly busy, so leaving Seoul early is a good idea.

My Daecheon Beach Travel Tips

Check the tide

This is my number one recommendation.

The West Sea tide can change significantly during the day.

Don’t set your parasol too close to the water

I made this mistake and moved mine about three times.

Look at the established parasol line

If you don’t want to keep moving, setting up farther back around the general commercial parasol area can be more convenient.

You don’t need to bring all your food from Seoul

Convenience stores and restaurants are close to the beach.

Keep plenty of cold water nearby

Korean summers can be extremely hot and humid.

Stay for the sunset

Swimming is only part of the Daecheon experience.

Walk around after dark

The beach area can remain lively at night, especially during the busy summer season.

Consider staying overnight

For families, I think 1 night and 2 days gives you a much more relaxed experience.

Our 1-Night Daecheon Beach Experience

Our trip was simple, but that was exactly what made it enjoyable.

We were two adults and two children.

We started with seolleongtang for breakfast.

Then we went swimming at Daecheon Beach.

We set up our own parasol, although I eventually had to move it three times because of the incoming tide.

For lunch, we brought chicken and hamburgers back to the beach and ate under our parasol.

When we needed additional water, ice, ramen or drinks, convenience stores were close by.

After swimming, we had ₩70,000 steamed shellfish with daepae samgyeopsal for dinner.

Then we watched the West Sea sunset.

After dark, we walked around the lively streets near Daecheon Beach and enjoyed the performances and busking.

Finally, we returned to Roen Minbak, where we stayed for the night.

For us, Daecheon wasn’t just somewhere to swim.

It was a complete summer family trip.

Final Thoughts

If you are looking for a west coast beach in Korea that is relatively easy to combine with a trip from Seoul, Daecheon Beach is worth considering.

The beach is large, the tourist area is convenient, and there is much more to do than simply swim.

You can eat Korean food, relax under a parasol, buy snacks from nearby convenience stores, watch a beautiful West Sea sunset and enjoy the lively atmosphere after dark.

And if you visit during the right period, you can experience the famous Boryeong Mud Festival as well.

My biggest lesson from the trip was very simple:

Don’t underestimate the West Sea tide.

Next time I visit Daecheon, I will still bring my own parasol.

I will just put it much farther away from the water from the beginning.

For a family trip from Seoul, I recommend spending 1 night and 2 days rather than rushing back home on the same day.

These photos show Kkotji Beach at sunset and low tide, one of the most beautiful sunset spots on Korea’s west coast.

Kkotji Beach is about a 30-minute drive from Daecheon Beach in Boryeong. At low tide, you can explore the tidal flats and look for clams, sea snails, and small crabs, while swimming can be enjoyed when sea conditions and water levels are suitable.

However, getting to Kkotji Beach is less convenient than Daecheon Beach, so traveling by car is recommended.

If you are staying at Daecheon Beach, you can also explore the rocky areas at the far end of the beach at low tide, where you may spot small crabs, shellfish, and other marine life.

For travelers with a car, Kkotji Beach is especially worth visiting in the late afternoon. Explore the coast at low tide and stay to watch one of Korea’s beautiful West Sea sunsets.

We caught them for fun and released them all back into the sea afterward.
