Inside the Restaurant

Each table has a grill built into the center. After you order, a staff member places the dakgalbi on the hot plate and keeps an eye on it while it cooks.

When you sit down, cups, small plates, and empty bowls are already set on the table. Side dishes are not served at the table. You get them yourself from the self-service bar.

Self-Service Side Dish Bar

Side dishes at Yoogane Dakgalbi are self-service. After you order, head to the self-service bar, grab a bowl, and take as much as you want.

The bar has stacks of plates and bowls, with side dishes in separate trays. You can take basic side dishes like kimchi and pickled radish, plus items that go well with dakgalbi, such as cabbage. Sauces are also set out there.

Dakgalbi can be spicy and rich, so pickled radish and cabbage are useful for refreshing your palate between bites. Take only a little at first and go back if you need more.

There’s a sign at the bar asking guests to take only what they need. Just take an amount you can finish.

What We Ordered

There were two of us, and we ordered the half & half dakgalbi for 2 people.

The half & half dakgalbi puts the spicy Yoogane Dakgalbi and the non-spicy Miso Honey Dakgalbi on one plate, half and half. One side has a red spicy sauce and the other a sweet soy-based sauce, so you can compare the two flavors.

We added mozzarella cheese. It melted in the middle, and we could dip the dakgalbi from both sides into it.

The red Yoogane Dakgalbi has a rich, spicy sauce, and you can really taste the restaurant’s signature flavor. The Miso Honey Dakgalbi is sweeter and milder, so it can be a better choice if you don’t usually eat spicy food.

To finish, we added a bowl of fried rice mix (볶음공기) and made fried rice. When you order it near the end of the meal, the staff stir-fries the rice with the leftover sauce for you.

Our Recommendation

We recommend two dishes at this restaurant.

  1. Half & Half Dakgalbi
If you’re dining with two or more people, the half & half dakgalbi is the safest choice. You get both a spicy and a mild flavor, and it’s an easy order for first-time visitors, especially if people in your group have different spice levels.
  2. Yoogane Dakgalbi
If you like spicy sauce or you’re visiting alone, we recommend the Yoogane Dakgalbi. It’s the restaurant’s signature dish, so it’s a great way to try the basic flavor of the place.

How to Enjoy Dakgalbi

If you ordered the half & half dakgalbi, start with the Miso Honey Dakgalbi and then move on to the red Yoogane Dakgalbi. If you eat the spicy sauce first, the sweetness of the Miso Honey can taste weaker.

First, try the dakgalbi without cheese to taste the original sauce. Then push the cheese to the middle and dip the dakgalbi into it.

Cooking the cabbage and green onion with the dakgalbi sauce helps cut the richness. Pairing it with kimchi or pickled radish from the self-service bar also refreshes your palate.

Don’t skip the fried rice at the end. The rice picks up the rich, savory flavor of the dakgalbi sauce left on the hot plate.

How Much Should You Order?

For two people, 2 servings of half & half dakgalbi plus one fried rice mix was a good amount.

If you are especially hungry, you can add cheese or noodles.

For three or four people, the half & half dakgalbi also comes in 3-serving and 4-serving sizes. Order according to how much your group normally eats.

If you’re visiting Korea for the first time and aren’t sure how much to order, the half & half dakgalbi is an easy place to start.

Is Dakgalbi Spicy?

It depends on the menu.

The red Yoogane Dakgalbi has a noticeably spicy sauce. The Miso Honey Dakgalbi is sweeter and milder.

If you’re sensitive to spicy food, the half & half dakgalbi is a safe choice because you can try both flavors in one order.

You can also eat the dakgalbi with cabbage, pickled radish, or other side dishes from the self-service bar to cool down the spice.

Tips Before You Visit

The restaurant is on the 2nd floor, so look for the sign at street level.

The side dishes are self-service, so go grab them right after you sit down.

During meal times, tourists and office workers fill the area, so there may be a wait. Reservations are available, so if you’re coming with a bigger group, call ahead at 02-775-3392.
